Every so often a bike is donated to the workshop which deserves some special care and attention. This vintage city bike is just such a machine.
Produced by the long defunct Automoto brand, we think it dates from the 1950’s. It is not really possible to be sure. Automoto were an established manufacturer of quality bicycles, in St Etienne in central France, by the time this bike was built. (You can read more about the company here.) It has some fantastic details, including the hammered alloy mudguards which are my personal favourite.
We have tried to restore it as faithfully as we can, using original parts where possible and keeping to the spirit of the bike when not. We did install a modern rear wheel as the one that was already in the bike was actually a different size! Probably not original in our estimation. Thanks to our volunteer Paul who has done a really amazing job!
It rides surprisingly well, a testament to the excellent design of the bike. Whilst the vintage technology doesn’t perform like modern componentry, that’s not really the point is it?
Currently on sale at £250, we will probably try to find a buyer a bit further afield than at our regular Friday sales, by advertising it online. However if anyone who reads this would like to see the bike in person, get in touch on 029 2061 6783.
