Velotech Gold

Velotech Gold is an accredited bike maintenance qualification, suitable for anyone needing to repair bicycles in a professional context as well as for serious enthusiasts. You will work on lots of different systems in order to give you a thorough understanding of the tasks a pro mechanic will face.

This course runs for five consecutive days from the start date given. It runs 0930–1600 each day.

Content

This course includes:

  • workshop practice and safety
  • basic procedures for wheel and tyre replacement
  • installation and adjustment of cable-operated brake systems
  • installation and adjustment of cable-operated gear systems
  • assessment, removal, and replacement of the transmission
  • servicing of hubs, headsets and threaded bottom brackets
  • spoke replacement and basic wheel truing

Assessment

Participants will be assessed through a written assignment and a practical workshop test. Participants who succeed in all respects will be awarded a Velotech Gold certificate, which is recognized by the Bicycle Association of Great Britain. Certificates may also be awarded at Bronze or Silver levels.

With the addition of the Velotech Platinum award, candidates would be qualified to a similar level and have the same skillset as an “industry standard” shop mechanic.

“We visited today and picked a bike for my 6 year-old. He got to try it out and you fixed the brakes as they were a bit squeaky! Very covid safe! Excellent bike and my boy loves it. Great it has a 3-month warranty too!”

“Sustainability has worked with CTW successfully for a number of years, with sessions every month on Campus. They provide bike servicing for staff, students and the local community as part of our free Repair Café events. It’s a service to all to promote sustainable cycle travelling to Campus and the benefits of repair. They are so knowledgeable and as well as fixing on site they provide great friendly honest advice.”

“Great place to go to get yourself a bike. No need to spend hundreds just get one second hand. Good communication, they even adjust the seat and handlebars to suit your height etc. My partner is very pleased with her bike and it looks brand new! Highly recommended.”

I’d just like to say a massive ‘Thank You’ to the boys and girls at Cardiff Cycle workshop. They’ve done absolute wonders for my bike over the years! It’s was an old heavy Peugeot which I bought from new in about 1990. Although I used it regularly, it was getting too heavy for me, so the team changed the wheels for ones that were much lighter; put some super duper tyres on them, and on top of that, replaced the old hard saddle for a brand new very comfortable one. I make sure that I get my bike serviced regularly with them too. Such a friendly bunch too-always time for a chat. There is nothing they don’t know about bikes. Highly recommended!

Sara McGaughey

“Came away a lot more confident with attempting to build a wheel. The course was run in a relaxed manner and no question was too much for Jon to answer. Look forward to my next course.”
